Del Mar Community Information: History

The city of Del Mar is situated north of La Jolla and south of Encinitas along the Pacific Coast. Del Mar is also located in the northern part of San Diego County. Del Mar encompasses 2 square miles of pacific coastline. Del Mar is also home an ever increasing population of 5,000. The name Del Mar was given by a women named Ella Loop and her husband who founded this city. It started as a tent site for the california southern railroad and eventually grew into a small community. They began selling land and a developement firm known as Howard and Lyons began developing the area and building homes. In 1959 the city of Del Mar was incorporated into San Diego and has been prospering ever since.
